Your Help Is Requested

Hello Friends and Friends of Friends,

As you may know, I am currently completing a residency at the Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, Italy where I am working on the beginning stages of a neighborhood fruit harvesting guide, essentially lessons that I’ve learned in establishing Forage Oakland. Forage Oakland is a backyard barter network based in Oakland, California, whereby residents barter their surplus backyard fruit with their North Oakland and South Berkeley neighbors. As Forage Oakland receives more press, the number of requests for ‘How To’ information has increased. Inquiries range from ‘How do I approach my neighbors when requesting surplus fruit?’ to ‘How, practically speaking, did you begin your neighborhood barter project?’. I thought it could be useful to compile this information into a ‘How To’ guide, and thus the idea for the guide was borne. I hope that the guide will be a useful tool for other Bay Area communities as they establish their own neighborhood fruit barter networks, and it can serve as a framework for establishing similar projects (not only projects that address the redistribution of excess fruit).

I would like to include a profile of all fruits that can be found in North Oakland and South Berkeley neighborhoods, and I would like to include an associated memory, experience, and recipe along with the each fruit’s profile. I would very much like this to be a community affair where all are welcome to contribute recipes, memories (i.e. first impressions; memories of a specific harvest, the meeting of a neighbor whose fruit you’ve adored from afar, etc.), and experiences. Anyone who has experienced the delight of Berkeley and Oakland’s backyard fruit bounty is encouraged to participate (San Francisco fruit memories are welcome, too.).

I will need all anecdotes, recipes, images, and two-sentence text messages by 10 September. This will only take a moment and your help would be greatly appreciated. Please forward widely!

Below is a list of fruits of Oakland/ Berkeley. You are welcome to write a memory relating to any of the fruits listed. If you find that a fruit has accidentally been omitted from this list, please feel free to add it and note a fond association.
